Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly is one of more than two dozen lawmakers asking the State Department to address processing delays for international students applying to study in the U.S.
In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Kelly. a Democrat, and the other senators say their constituents and other stakeholders report a lack of timely visa appointments for students and scholars ahead of the academic year.
They say the delays exacerbate uncertainty for international students — who supported more than 355,000 jobs last year and contribute nearly $43 billion annually.
They are asking the agency for processing times, the number of applications rejected under new vetting guidelines and other data.
The Trump administration revoked more than 6,000 student visas last year as part of an ongoing immigration crackdown — including over 100 from universities in Arizona.
