Much of the Mexican state of Sonora, south of Arizona, has been bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Polo.
Hurricane Polo is predicted to make landfall on the Baja peninsula Monday evening before heading inland to Sonora on Tuesday.
A hurricane warning is in effect for much of Sonora’s southern coastline, including the popular beach destinations of Bahía Kino and San Carlos. Schools are closed throughout the state Tuesday.
The National Hurricane Center predicts Polo will remain a hurricane when it makes landfall in mainland Mexico.
Polo will no longer be a hurricane by the time it reaches the United States, but remnants and moisture from the storm could produce heavy rainfall and gusty winds in Arizona this week.
Another storm system — tropical storm Rachel — off of Mexico’s southwest coast has been moving north in Polo’s wake, and strengthened into a tropical storm Sunday.
