The United States announced sanctions against additional alleged members of a faction of the Sinaloa cartel Tuesday.

The new U.S. Treasury Department sanctions target 21 people and 25 entities it says are associated with the Mayiza faction of the Sinaloa cartel.

The sanctions’ targets include Ismael Zambada Sicairos — also known as “Mayito Flaco” — the son of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. The longtime Sinaloa cartel boss was recently sentenced to life in prison in the United States.

Treasury now describes Zambada Sicairos as the “undisputed head” of a faction of the cartel loyal to his father. Two factions of the Sinaloa cartel have been warring for power since the arrest of “El Mayo” two years ago.

The sanctions also target the former husband of the governor of Baja California, who the United States claims uses his political influence to help the Sinaloa cartel.
