A private prison company has been awarded almost $26 million to open a new detention facility in the town of Marana — just northwest of Tucson.
The Utah-based Management & Training Corporation, or MTC, operates several prisons and ICE facilities around the United States. This Marana site is an old state prison that was run by MTC before Arizona severed that contract and shut it down in 2023.
It was sold back to the company last year for $15 million.
MTC directed questions about who would be detained at the facility and how it plans to expand without causing overcrowding to DHS. The agency did not respond to questions in time for publication.
