An example of food waste, a fresh load of discarded produce. Here it's placed on a bed of mulch to be mixed and start composting.

A new city project in Tucson aims to cut down on food waste by having residents bring it in for composting.

The program began this month and includes informational sessions where residents can learn about food cycles and waste management. The next session takes place this Thursday in Tucson.

Residents who complete that 30-minute session and additional training can get a free home compost pail for food scraps and access to a number of drop-off sites set up around the city.

City officials say that waste will then be used at city-run composting sites to improve air quality and decrease food waste.

Last month, Pima County’s environmental quality department issued a ground-level action day for the Tucson metro amid high pollution levels.
