Arizona abortion rights campaign has far outraised its opposition group

Healthcare Rising Arizona seeks to gather signatures from voters at the Arizona State Fair to add abortion access to the general election ballot in 2024.

The political action group seeking to enshrine abortion rights in Arizona’s constitution reports it has brought in nearly $23 million in donations. Campaign finance filings this week show the Arizona for Abortion Access campaign has far out-raised its opposition group.

Arizona for Abortion Access has taken major contributions from the political branches of Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union. Phoebe Gates, the 21-year-old daughter of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is the group’s highest-contributing individual donor. She gave $750,000 to the campaign in June.

With $9.5 million on hand after expenses, the campaign has more than 20 times as much cash as its opposition group.

The It Goes Too Far campaign reports it has raised about $838,000 in total and has about $408,000 in cash after expenses. That group's largest contributors are individual donors, as well as the political arm of the anti-abortion Center for Arizona Policy.

Since 2022, Arizona has banned abortions after 15 weeks of gestation, except in some medical emergencies. The proposed Arizona Abortion Access Act would allow abortions until the point of fetal viability — around 24 weeks — with broad exceptions beyond that when health risks are involved.

The Arizona for Abortion Access campaign submitted more than 820,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's Office earlier this month in hopes of qualifying for Arizona's November ballot. The signatures are still under review.
