A day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

In recent weeks, Hobbs would not say whether she thought Biden should remain the Democratic nominee, but she did acknowledge the president’s poor debate performance in June left Arizona voters with legitimate questions about whether he was the right candidate moving forward.

In a statement endorsing Harris, Hobbs said Americans are looking for a new generation of leadership to unite them around common values.

“I believe that leader is Vice President Harris, and I look forward to working with her to lower costs for Arizonans, restore reproductive freedom, and defend our democratic rights,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs joined a growing list of Arizona Democrats who are backing Harris to replace Biden as the party’s presidential nominee, including Sen. Mark Kelly, Attorney General Kris Mayes and Congressmen Ruben Gallego, Raúl Grijalva and Greg Stanton.

The Arizona Democratic Party’s executive board also voted unanimously to support Harris’ presidential bid.
