Arizona’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention voted unanimously to support Vice President Harris’ presidential bid.
In a statement, the Arizona Democratic Party says all 91 members of the delegation back Harris to replace President Joe Biden, who on Sunday withdrew from the race for the party’s nomination.
“Vice President Harris has championed key issues Arizonans care about — protecting democracy and our fundamental freedoms — and is the only candidate in this race that will continue to push America forward towards a brighter future,” state party Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano said in the statement.
Karl Gentles, one of Arizona’s Democratic delegates, told KJZZ’s The Show that the decision to support Harris will prevent intra-party drama from playing out at the DNC in Chicago next month.
“Democrats' focus needs to be on prosecuting the case against Donald Trump and prosecuting the case for, by extension, the Biden Administration through Kamala Harris.”
The Associated Press reported Harris has secured enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee. The DNC is expected to hold a virtual vote on Aug. 7 ahead of the convention.
