A new volunteer program through the U.S. government will partner young adults with the Forest Service to help protect public lands.

It’s called the Forest Corps and it’s made up of an Americorps program coupled with the Forest Service.

Volunteers will help with everything from prescribed burns, to eliminating hazardous fuels in the forests and conducting wildlife surveys.

Ken Goodson is director of the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps. He says the forest work is just one component of the project.

"And then the second component of it would be to help prepare and train a new generation of young adults who can be ready to move into environmental conservation, land management and other green careers," he said.
