A group of 13 hikers was rescued from a Scottsdale trail Friday morning after getting lost and running out of water.
One adult and three children – ages 10, 18 months and 12 months – were taken to hospitals.
Fire Captain Dave Folio says the group went off-trail at McDowell Sonoran Preserve and was found under a tree about 2 miles from the Gateway Trailhead. The hikers were believed to be visiting from out of town.
"Don’t be deceived by it was probably a little cooler this morning. We’re asking people to hydrate the night before, hydrate when you get here, and when you run halfway done with your water, turn back and go to the trailhead – you’re, you’re, you’re done."
Folio said children, especially babies and toddlers, have trouble regulating heat. A 10-year-old boy died of heat-related illness while hiking with his family at South Mountain Park earlier this month.
