An event co-hosted by the Tucson Police Department and the University of Arizona this week will ask community members to weigh in on gun violence and how to prevent it.

The event is part of a project called Barrios Seguros, or Safe Neighborhoods. It’s funded by a $2 million grant city officials received from the Department of Justice and focuses on community violence intervention efforts.

TPD says they’ll work with local nonprofits and other governmental agencies to stave off future violence through community outreach and assistance with things like housing, jobs and substance abuse.

The community panel is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the University of Arizona. Participants can share their experiences and hear about new research to cut down on gun crimes. More information here.
