Nonprofit offers free training for volunteers to help immigrant children

The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights is a national nonprofit that supports unaccompanied immigrant children in federal custody, and they’re offering free training in a bid to gather more volunteers in the Valley.

In early September, the Young Center is inviting Phoenix-area residents of all backgrounds to learn more about becoming a Volunteer Child Advocate.

These volunteers spend time with and support unaccompanied children during deportation proceedings.

Becoming one involves a thorough process that includes background checks and a tuberculosis screening. Once assigned to a child, volunteers see them weekly to accompany them to hearings, research their home country situation, and help advocate for their best interests.

Applications are due Aug. 16.
