As the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge reaches its 10th anniversary, Arizona is reflecting on the campaign that brought widespread attention to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The viral challenge of 2014 not only captured the world's attention but also raised substantial funds for ALS research and patient care.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge saw participants from all walks of life — including celebrities, athletes, and everyday individuals — drench themselves in ice-cold water and share their videos on social media. The campaign's unique blend of fun, challenge, and a good cause resonated widely, resulting in $220 million raised globally for ALS research.

Angie Tigges, director of Development for ALS Arizona, highlighted the significant outcomes from the funds raised during the campaign.

"It definitely accelerated the research leading to different discoveries," Tigges said. "It also expanded care for people living with ALS. And then also, the government took more of a vested interest."

In Arizona, ALS Arizona has made a significant impact, serving 600 patients and families in the state. The organization now operates independently from the national chapter to ensure that funds raised locally stay in Arizona to support local programs and research.

ASU social media specialist Perri Collins notes the challenge’s broader impact.

"I think that other organizations who are raising money for good things should be aware of the power of social media and they can start their own different challenges," Collins said. "Who knows what's going to become popular next."

ALS Arizona will celebrate the 10-year mark of the Ice Bucket Challenge this Saturday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Salt River Fields in the Centerfield lot. The event aims to honor the campaign's legacy and its ongoing impact on ALS research and patient care.
