The city of Tempe is closing its 2024 Community Survey soon.

The results of that survey will be used to identify priorities and plan the city’s budget.

Tempe has released its survey annually for over 25 years. More than a thousand households usually respond, online or through the mail, to questions about the quality of emergency services, neighborhood parks, public transportation and more.

Wydale Holmes directs the Strategic Management and Innovation Office for the city. She said they look at the data from a number of different angles, not just overall ratings.

“Are we having lower ratings or gaps, based on a demographic category? It’s one thing for you and I to think we have high levels of service, but my neighbor who has only lived there for five years, that may speak a different language, may have a different household than I have, are they also satisfied with city services?” Holmes said.

In the past, people had said they didn’t feel safe in parks at night, so Tempe implemented a park ranger program.

“They are there to make sure that the park can be enjoyed by everyone and they also can work with our public safety, our fire, our homeless outreach teams to also serve those at the parks that may be in need," Holmes said.

Last year, people were most concerned about those experiencing homelessness, street conditions and police services.

This year’s survey will be available online until Monday, Aug. 5. The findings will be presented at several public meetings in November.
