Arrowhead Mall is showcasing 11 Olympic-themed sculptures — made entirely from cans of food

If your mom ever told you to stop playing with your food, there's an event going on right now that's for you.

This week, about 40,000 cans of food are on display at Arrowhead Mall in Glendale. The 17th annual Canstruction Phoenix Metro Design Build competition got underway over the weekend.

In the past, competitors have built fairytale castles, Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls and even the head of Medusa.

This year, 11 teams of Arizona architects, engineers and construction workers recreated Olympic scenes in sculptures made entirely from cans of food. From skateboarding and surfing to ping pong and high jump, each team was given eight hours to stack thousands of pounds of canned goods.

You won’t see depictions of athletes — you’ll have to get back to the TV for that. But you can see these canstructions now through Aug. 16, and you can vote for your favorite online at canstructionphx.org.

All of the food will be donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank after the competition.
