The Gilbert Town Council approved on Tuesday paying unarmed security guards to patrol two parking garages where a teen fatally fell in May and others were allegedly assaulted.
The guards will work Wednesday through Saturday nights at the downtown garages.
One resident told the council that the death happened on a Monday.
Mayor Brigette Peterson replied that when the guards patrol is based on cost and data.
“And the data shows when the majority of the people are in the parking garage. And unfortunately, bad things happen at times when somebody isn’t present,” Peterson said.
Police Chief Michael Soelberg said the guards will be trained to be extra eyes and ears for his officers.
The cost to Gilbert is $80,000 for six months.
