Semiconductors are used to manufacture microchips, small electronic devices that are necessary to operate anything from your coffee maker to your smartphone.
Dr. Terry Alford, an associate director at Arizona State University’s School for Engineering, Matter and Technology, says students who come out of the university’s semiconductor programs will be critical for the microchip manufacturing workforce.
"It impacts every aspect of our lives. We don’t want to have disruptions in the supply chain. We want to make sure we have workforce available to companies. I think ASU plays a critical role in a global arena," Alford says.
Alford also says that ASU supplies the most engineers to Intel, one of the largest microchip manufacturers in the world.
