The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed Dr. Eric Meyer to replace Democrat Laura Terech, who resigned from the Arizona House of Representatives in June.
Meyer, a former lawmaker, will represent Legislative District 4, which covers parts of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.
Meyer was one of three nominees to fill Terech’s seat and the only candidate not seeking election to the Legislature in November. The other candidates, former lawmaker Kelli Butler and Karen Gresham, are running as a Democratic slate against Republican Rep. Matt Gress and Pamela Carter in the general election.
Meyer will hold the seat until January, when new lawmakers elected in November are sworn in.
Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates says Meyers’ experience as a lawmaker made him the right choice.
“Dr. Meyer is certainly prepared to hit the ground running if he’s called upon; we understand that the Legislature’s not in session,” Gates said.
The Legislature adjourned in June, but Meyer could still vote if Gov. Katie Hobbs calls a special session.
