A nationwide initiative to increase pet adoptions and donations for local animal shelters will take place over the next month. That initiative is hoping to support overcrowded shelters inside Maricopa County.

The “Clear the Shelters” initiative is helping support Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. Sept. 7-8, the agency will be waiving fees for all dogs 6 months and older in efforts to clear their shelters.

“We had a waive-fee adoption event all through July, and like I said, we had more than1,000 adoptions. They do work," said Kimberly Powell with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

Powell says that both the East and West Valley shelters are overcapacity. At the West Valley shelter alone, there are nearly 1,000 lost, surrendered or stray dogs awaiting their owner or adoption. That facility is only meant to hold 640 animals.
