AZ Supreme Court chief justice says she will not recuse herself on Proposition 137 hearing

The Arizona State Courts Building in downtown Phoenix houses the Arizona Supreme Court and the Arizona Court of Appeals.

The state Supreme Court is set to hear a case on a ballot proposal that could result in judges having near lifelong terms.

Proposition 137 would override the system in which judges are appointed by the governor and placed on the ballot at the end of a multi-year term.

Two justices have recused themselves from the case, citing the fact that they are up for retention this year.

Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer has not, saying any impact the measure might have on her is speculative.

"There's a lot of 'if's' in there on what may or may not occur. It may not occur that I even stand for retention again. I'm up, as you probably know, in 2028," Timmer said.

The court is set to hear arguments on the validity of the proposition this week.
