The number of older adults who are struggling to afford rent is climbing. And for many, it means the possibility of being evicted. Nearly 8,000 evictions were filed in Maricopa County justice courts last month.

Tami Bohannon is the president and CEO of the Foundation for Senior Living, or FSL.

"We have 24 affordable housing communities throughout the state of Arizona, about 998 units. So every night, over 1,000 older adults have a place to call home."

FSL has been doing this for 30 years.

"And it has gotten much harder for us to build an affordable housing community. We've been trying for six years to build a property in Flagstaff, and we still have not successfully stacked up the capital," Bohannon said. Bohannon says the Flagstaff project is expected to cost $32 million.

FSL does have one other affordable housing community in Flagstaff.

"It's 15 years old, Flagstaff Senior Meadows. There's a waitlist of over three years for that property," Bohannon said.

In the meantime, she says, "We've got an eviction prevention program that we're putting into place, we’re piloting."

FLS receives daily calls from seniors who are on the verge of losing their housing.
