2024 Arizona 1st Congressional District race: The candidates

Learn more about the candidates for Arizona's 1st Congressional District race. The area covers northeast Maricopa County including Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and Cave Creek. CD1 leans slightly Republican, but is considered competitive.

Schweikert is a longtime congressman and the incumbent Republican in the race representing District 1. Schweikert is a former state lawmaker and former treasurer of Maricopa County who was first elected to U.S. Congress in 2010.

In 2018, a House ethics committee investigated Schweikert and his chief of staff for misusing funds. In 2020, Schweikert admitted to 11 violations and paid a fine.

Schweikert narrowly kept his seat in the 2022 general election against then-challenger Jevin Hodge. Schweikert won by less than 1% of the vote. Schweikert lives in Fountain Hills.

Shah, an emergency room doctor, is also a former state lawmaker who won election to the state House of Representatives in 2018. Shah was a registered Republican in the 2016 election, but he told the Arizona Agenda that he only did that “strategically,” then switched right back to being a registered Democrat.

In this year’s primary election, Shah beat out five other Democrats in a tight race.
