Relief efforts for the Havasupai Tribe are ongoing after last week’s flash flood in the Grand Canyon that left people trapped and took the life of a Gilbert woman.

Tribal spokesperson Abbie Fink said emergency crews are still evaluating the damage the flooding has caused.

“It’ll take several days to determine the extent of the damage. The trails, the campground, some of the common areas, as well as some of the tribal homes and buildings were damaged as well,” she said.

Fink said there’s currently no estimate for when the reservation will reopen to visitors, and that the Havasupai tribe is asking people who had reservations to travel there to be patient while the tribe recovers from the floods.

The Arizona National guard has evacuated more than 100 people from the flash floods, including tourists and tribal members.

Fink said that the loss of Chenoa Nickerson is tragic, but that the tribe is grateful that more people were not hurt or killed in the flooding.
