Learn more about the candidates for Arizona's U.S. Senate seat: Ruben Gallego and Kari Lake. The campaign for Arizona's open U.S. Senate seat will be one of the most closely watched races in the country. The winner could determine control of the chamber in 2025, and either pave the way for a party's agenda, or serve as a roadblock to the next president's signature policy proposals.
Ruben Gallego
Party: Democrat

Gallego ran unopposed for the Democratic Party's nomination after the state's incumbent senator, Kyrsten Sinema, changed her party registration in 2022, then decided against running for reelection as an independent. A retired Marine who served in Iraq, Gallego has served the Phoenix metro area in Congress for nearly a decade. Before that, he was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives.
Kari Lake
Party: Republican

An election-denying ally of former President Donald Trump, Lake handily won the Republican Party's nomination for the U.S. Senate. Lake's star rapidly rose in 2022, when she received the party's nomination in Arizona's gubernatorial race shortly after retiring as a television news anchor. While running for Senate, Lake continues to deny her loss to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, and continues to pursue lawsuits seeking to have the outcome of that election overturned — and have herself instated as governor.
