A former Customs and Border Protection officer has been found guilty of sexually assaulting and kidnapping a child in Douglas in 2022.
A jury found former CBP officer Aaron Mitchell guilty of a federal civil rights offense and kidnapping for an April 2022 incident in which he abducted, restrained and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl who had been on her way to school.
Douglas Police arrested Mitchell in April of 2022 after the girl reported her assault and kidnapping to authorities. She said Mitchell was wearing a tactical vest labeled "POLICE" when he stopped her as she walked on the sidewalk and asked for her immigration information. After she provided it, Mitchell placed her in his vehicle and told her he was taking her to the police station. He then handcuffed her hands and feet and took her to his apartment in Sierra Vista, where assaulted her for several hours.
Jurors heard those details in a two-week trial and found Mitchell guilty of aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping and causing bodily harm. A sentencing date has not yet been set. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
