Tempe Mayor Corey Woods led a group of Arizona Democrats on Friday in touting Vice President Kamala Harris’ plan to lower housing costs.

If elected president, Harris says her administration will provide down-payment assistance to first-time home buyers and incentivize starter-home construction.

Woods acknowledges it will take time to fix the housing issue.

“This is not an issue that’s going to be solved overnight. It’s going to take vision, perseverance and a commitment to bringing all stakeholders together," he said.

In 2022, the Arizona Department of Housing estimated the state was 270,000 housing units short of meeting demand. Harris says she wants 3 million new housing units built across the U.S. by the end of her first term.

Former President Donald Trump has criticized her plan as too expensive.
