ADOT has announced that 18 new electric vehicle charging stations will be built along Arizona’s interstates.
Range anxiety is common among the owners of electric vehicles — the fear of losing power and being stranded in the middle of a long trip is often enough to deter EV owners from taking road trips in their EVs.
It’s also enough to stop some prospective EV buyers in their tracks.
ADOT said on Thursday that it’s trying to combat that range anxiety and encourage more widespread EV adoption in Arizona by installing more charging stations, funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program.
ADOT spokesperson Garin Groff said, “The purpose of these stations is to reduce range anxiety for people who have electric vehicles, so that electric vehicles can become a viable alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles.”
According to Groff, the stations will be privately owned and operated. They’ll also be co-located with existing businesses like gas stations, restaurants, and hotels.
“The idea is that these will generally be located no more than 50 miles apart to help reduce range anxiety for people who own electric vehicles,” he said.
Construction of each station is expected to take up to a year after the final contracts have been signed, which means some of these charging stations can be expected to open by late 2025.
