Hispanics are one-and-a-half times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia than white Americans. It’s why the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is hosting a bilingual community event later this month, aimed at educating Hispanics about the different aspects of dementia.
Dr. Jeremy Pruzin is a cognitive behavioral neurologist at Banner Alzheimer’s
"There is a higher frequency, yet we tend to do a poor job, we as in the field, in enrolling Hispanic participants in clinical trials and research studies," Pruzin said.
One reason is that, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than half are hesitant to participate in trials because they don’t want to be “guinea pigs.” Participants at the event will learn about treatments, ongoing research and how to maintain brain health.
“Alzheimer’s in the Hispanic Community: How You Can Help” will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Peoria Community Center, 8335 W. Jefferson St.
