Election officials across the country have been facing harassment and threats, including in Arizona.

Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates says efforts to ward off potential violence are working.

“It’s sad that we’ve had to do this but we put these barricades and things of that sort in place to keep people safe.”

A Brennan Center survey done earlier this year found that the vast majority of election officials nationwide have taken steps since 2020 to protect voters, election workers and election infrastructure from threats and violence in 2024.

Arizona law prohibits any campaigning, as well as taking pictures or videos within 75 feet of a voting center. Gates says that law stops people from taking pictures of poll workers or their vehicle license places.
