Hundreds of volunteers placed 2,977, 6-foot-tall American flags at Tempe Beach Park to honor each victim of the 9/11 terror attacks. Tempe Healing Field chairman Nick Bastian says this tradition is now one of the longest-running healing fields in the country.
"Like a lot of people, we vowed to never forget what happened that day. There’s so much raw emotion at this event, that it just keeps bringing us back."
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Bastian says they will hold a ceremony Wednesday.
