Close to 90 dogs were removed from Tucson home. Now some are up for adoption

A group of four small dogs is seen closest to the camera, cuddled up on a small blue cot. Another small dog sits behind the cot, looking at the camera, and three additional little dogs look in from the doorway.

Close to 90 small dogs were taken from a condemned home in Tucson in early September.

Close to 90 small dogs were taken from a condemned home in Tucson over the weekend.

Since then, Kayleigh Murdock with Pima Animal Care Center said they've all been getting medical and behavioral assessments.

“We’ve still got a little bit more to go in that regard but in general they look pretty good,” said Murdock.

Breed-wise, Murdock said the 10- to 15-pound crowd runs the gamut and includes several litters of puppies.

“It does appear to be the case in this situation that it wasn’t necessary a breeding operation,” she said. “It just was a case where a lot of unfixed dogs were living together and unfortunately continued to reproduce.”

The addition means record-high capacity for the shelter.

“Before this case we already had about 530 dogs in our shelter, which is beyond capacity for us already,” Murdock said. “So taking in this additional batch of 88 puts us beyond capacity.”

According to Murdock, some dogs have already been placed with homes and others are available for adoption, with dozens more hopefully to follow in the coming days.
