Mesa families with young children now have access to more free services.

The city of Mesa has opened a new Mesa Family Resource Center at its Main Library on East First Street. The center provides caregivers and families who have children from zero to 5 years old with free activities, referrals to community agencies, and parenting education classes.

Sarah Tolar is the Education and Workforce administrator for the city of Mesa. She said the center is funded by a four-year grant from First Things First, Arizona’s early childhood agency.

“The First Things regional board came to us and had identified 85204 as a ZIP code that lacked resources for families with children ages zero to five," Tolar said.

Tolar said families will be able to access things like diapers and formula as well as other services.

“From getting referrals to help fill out SNAP or WIC, there are workforce resources, they are scheduled to bring in a financial literacy workshop," Tolar said.

The center has been open for two weeks but will host a grand opening event on Thursday, Sept. 26.
