Phoenix Suns fans will notice a new component of the players’ uniforms this season: a black jersey band marked “AL.”
It’s a tribute to Hall of Fame play-by-play announcer Al McCoy, who died Sept. 21 at the age of 91.
Team owner Matt Ishbia said it’s the least they can do for a man who did so much for the team and for fans:
“[We’re] sad we couldn't bring him a championship while he was alive, but I know hopefully we'll get one with him on our jersey,” he said. “I know he'll be watching from above so he'll be missed and his family is obviously still part of our family here.”
Ishbia said McCoy — who served as the voice of the Suns for 51 years — would be proud to be honored this way.
