Phoenix typically sees its last 100-degree day of the year in early October. But temperatures up to 110 degrees are forecast this weekend, with an excessive heat warning in effect through Sunday.
“Typically we’re done issuing excessive heat warnings by the middle part of September, but the fact that we’re issuing excessive heat warnings in October at this point is pretty unprecedented,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Isaac Smith.
The last few days have brought the hottest October temperatures in Phoenix history. Phoenix is normally done with 110-degree days by late August and has never passed 110 in October before. Tuesday’s high reached 113.
Smith said there’s not much relief in sight, but said temperatures could cool off a little next week.
“After we get through the weekend into next week, hopefully we’re going to be finally done with the 110s,” Smith said.
Smith said temperatures are still likely to be above normal into mid-October. And triple digits are possible for a few more weeks. Phoenix’s latest 100-degree day on record was Oct. 27, back in 2016.
