Adaptive sports equipment can cost thousands of dollars and is often not covered by insurance.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has provided grants to organizations that help disabled vets gain access to sports for nearly a decade.

Rachel McArdle is with the VA and said veteran access to sports is health care.

“Veterans are entitled to prosthetic devices, which includes adaptive sports equipment, that are part of their rehabilitation treatment plans within the VA healthcare system," McArdle said.

This year, the VA gave nearly $16 million to 91 groups across the country, including some that do business in Arizona, like Challenged Athletes Foundation and Move United.
