Tempe residents have long pushed for options to recycle styrofoam. The city is now providing one.

Residents of Tempe and Guadalupe can now recycle some styrofoam products at Tempe’s Household Products Collection Center. Drop-offs can be made on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

While common styrofoam products like cups and trays are still prohibited, the city is accepting firm items that would produce white pellets when torn — things like blocks, chunks and coolers.

Megan Pardue is a Tempe public information officer.

“In the past, we have been able to contract vendors for our zero-waste day events, which are drive-thru events we offer four times a year to residents. But that's never been consistent," she said.

Pardue also warns people against placing styrofoam products in blue recycling bins as doing this can contaminate the entire load.
