A former Phoenix police officer who was fired by the department’s chief in April is still waiting to find out if he’ll get his job back.

Requests by Jesse Johnson have twice been denied by the city’s Civil Service Board, but his appeal is still alive.

Johnson was fired in April over a 2022 shooting that led to a $5.5 million payout by the city.

A blistering civil rights report by the U.S. Justice Department cites the incident as an example of Phoenix police using tactics that increase the risk for deadly encounters.

An appeal by Johnson went before the Phoenix Civil Service Board hours after the DOJ report dropped in June, and it was denied.

Last month, Johnson’s motion for reconsideration was also denied by the Board.

But his appeal continues.

The board had been set to meet this week, but won’t convene again until November.
