Average temperatures so far in October have been about 14 degrees above normal, shattering multiple records. Now the city of Phoenix is again postponing the closing date for summer heat relief operations.
Back in May, Phoenix launched a 24-hour heat relief site for the first time ever. The all-hours cooling center, located at Burton Barr Library, had been set to close at the end of September, but October started off with record-breaking heat, so the city said doors would stay open an extra week.
Now, triple-digits are still in the forecast, so the city says the site will remain open at least through Oct. 14.
Demand remains high. In July, the 24-hour cooling center was getting more than 1,000 visits per week. As of this month, the city reports the site has still been getting more than 800 visits per week.
