In May of 2023, Tempe voters rejected a plan to build a hockey arena for the Arizona Coyotes. City officials who supported the plan were accused of improperly trying to influence the election.

A complaint alleged that City Council members improperly used city resources associated with their social media accounts to advocate for the project.

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigated and dismissed the complaint, saying all of the city’s public-facing communications were “appropriately content-neutral.”

Voters rejected the proposed Tempe Entertainment District, which led to the Arizona Coyotes relocating to Utah this season.

The city of Tempe released a statement after the AG’s dismissal of the complaint, saying it “is committed to ensuring fair and neutral elections.”
