The U.S. Department of Transportation announced more than $172 million in funding for two Arizona infrastructure projects. The U.S. 93 Corridor and Arizona Grand Avenue will be targeted for improvements.
$147 million will be put toward the intersection of Grand Avenue, 35th Avenue and Indian School Road. That project seeks to eliminate two crossings in hopes of preventing freight delays from traffic and vehicle crashes.
John Bullen is the chief transportation officer for the Maricopa Association of Governments. He said the $147 million grant is the largest discretionary grant the association has ever received.
“It’ll make things a lot safer and really make it much easier to transverse throughout the area," Bullen said.
Another $26 million will go toward improving 4-and-a-half miles of U.S. 93 inside Wickenburg. That section will be converted from a two-lane rural highway to a four-lane divided highway. The department said this improvement is expected to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by more than 70%.
