Arizona hunters are playing a key role in recovery efforts for the endangered California condor.

According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, hunters are voluntarily working to reduce the amount of lead exposure to the species.

Lead poisoning has been identified as the leading cause of diagnosed death in endangered condors and the main obstacle to a self-sustaining population in northern Arizona and southern Utah.

Since 2008, more than 80% of hunters in Arizona’s condor range have voluntarily used lead-free ammunition or, if they used lead ammunition, removed their gut piles from the field.

Game and Fish is encouraging all hunters to join the effort this fall. Those who do will be entered into a prize raffle.
