The Phoenix City Council is scheduled to consider reducing speed limits in certain parts of the city when it meets Wednesday afternoon.

Neighboring Tempe cut speed limits on several roadways this month.

The potential changes in city code would reduce speed limits by five or 10 miles per hour on sections of roads throughout Phoenix, such as Tatum Boulevard and 15th Avenue.

Other affected roads, like Estrella Drive and 65th Avenue, are newly built or annexed. Transportation officials are recommending the reductions due to road and traffic conditions identified by engineering studies.

Phoenix is also reviving the use of red-light and speed cameras. Earlier this year, the City Council adopted a strategy to get more federal money for roadway safety.
