Arizona's bald eagle population is largest ever recorded, agency says

Yampa River bald eagle

A bald eagle perches on a branch near the Yampa River on May 24, 2023. This wet spring has been a boon for wildlife, as strong river flows rebuild fish habitat and keep trees and bushes lush and full of birds.

The bald eagle population in Arizona has grown to its largest ever documented size.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department reports 90 pairs of eagles occupying breeding locations across the state. The 2024 breeding season, which runs December through August, also saw a record 96 hatchlings.

Game and Fish management coordinator Kenneth Jacobson said it appears the state’s conservation and protection efforts for the eagles are working.

Under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, criminal penalties for those who kill or disturb bald eagles can result in major fines, imprisonment or both.
