A Phoenix police officer fired by the chief in April over a shooting later cited by the Justice Department in a yearslong civil rights investigation might get his job back on Thursday.

The city’s Civil Service Board is set to convene its monthly meeting after having canceled in October.

The board is scheduled to receive a report and recommendation from a hearing officer on whether to give Jesse Johnson back a Phoenix police officer badge.

Johnson was fired over the 2022 shooting of a man with a mental health problem who was throwing rocks into traffic. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, and the city settled the case for $5.5 million.

The DOJ cites the shooting as an example of Phoenix police using tactics that increase the risk for deadly encounters.

The board has already twice denied requests by Johnson, but members are again scheduled to take up his appeal in private.
