TSA cautions holiday travelers about scam aimed at PreCheck members

Passengers wait to walk through the checkpoint two-by-two. A bomb-sniffing dog passes behind each pair.

The TSA warns people about a scam aimed at members of its PreCheck program. More than 18 million people are expected to be screened between Tuesday and Monday, according to the TSA.

The scam comes in the form of an email or correspondence encouraging people to renew their memberships, which may lead to an online payment. The Federal Trade Commission says that TSA does not accept payments online.

Arizona TSA spokesperson Patricia Mancha says the agency would not ask for certain personal information.

“TSA will never contact you and require or request that you provide payment information, any information about yourself to include your date of birth, your Social Security number, your checking account number or your credit card number," she said.

To avoid falling for the scam, Mancha says people can check their membership by visiting TSA.gov.
