COVID-19 took a deadly toll on nursing home residents. Now, a new study shows mortality rates among this population remains higher than pre-pandemic levels.

The mortality rate per 100,000 residents was nearly 5,700 in December 2020, when COVID-19 was hitting nursing home residents hard.

By November 2023, the mortality rate was 4,000 per 100,000, still higher than pre-pandemic figures. According to the article, the higher numbers likely have to do with the low COVID-19 vaccination rates among residents.

The CDC's vaccination dashboard shows that in Arizona, only 26% of nursing home residents are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. The percentage of fully vaccinated staff is even lower, at just under 5%.
