After Phoenix’s hottest summer and fall ever, the Valley is still breaking heat records in December. The high temperature in Phoenix reached 83 degrees Tuesday — that’s 14 degrees above normal, and it broke a record dating all the way back to 1940.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mark O’Malley said a ridge of high pressure has been keeping temperatures warm in the Valley, but it’s easing off. He said temperatures will drop into the middle and upper 70s for the rest of the week — but that’s still warm.

“Typically this time of year we see high temperatures in the upper 60s and low temperatures in the middle 40s, so we’ll generally be seeing temperatures a good five degrees or so above normal,” O’Malley said.

The National Weather Service predicts most of Arizona is likely to continue to see above-normal temperatures throughout December, January and February.
