AAA Arizona predicts a record number of travelers will hit the road or hop on an airplane this holiday season.

Nationwide, AAA is expecting almost 120 million people to be traveling for Christmas and the New Year. In Arizona alone, it will be about 2.3 million people.

AAA Arizona spokesman Julian Paredes said as airfare remains too high for many people, the roads will be busier than usual.

“The worst days to be traveling are gonna be the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas," Paredes said. "That’s gonna be the big travel day for a lot of people. So avoid the weekend if you can and get started as early as you can.”

He said the good news for drivers is that gas prices will be slightly cheaper this year.

The national average for a gallon of gas is closing in on the three-dollar mark. The last time the national average was below three dollars was in 2021.
