How to keep pets safe during holiday fireworks

Arizona law considers pets as personal property.

Arizona state law allows people to set off legal consumer fireworks between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4. This holiday season, along with the Fourth of July, are among the busiest times of year for animal shelters.

The sound of fireworks and bright lights can scare pets. Left unattended in the backyard, they may try to get away by digging or going over a fence.

The Humane Society suggests people keep pets indoors and turn on the TV or music to help drown out the sounds. Playing or practicing tricks with a pet may also help to distract them from fireworks.

The group says dogs should never be punished for being afraid because it will only increase the fear. Keeping information on ID tags and microchips up to date is important year round.
