This month, drivers have been able to enjoy a nice break from metro Phoenix's frequent freeway closures. But, that’ll be changing in the new year.
Doug Nintzel is with the Arizona Department of Transportation. He says despite the inconvenience to drivers, freeway closures will have to resume.
"There's a trade-off in the fact that we're making progress in improving the highways, but that comes with the fact that restrictions are needed to get that work done," said Nintzel.
That work primarily involves improving the pavement on existing stretches of freeway. Of course, that work often occurs on the weekend. But there’s a reason for that.
"It's where the contractor can get a lot of work done and keep a project on schedule, where a project isn't lasting year after year. We're actually able to bring these projects to a conclusion," Nintzel said.
